Shillong, June 3: UDP Vice President Robertjune Kharjahrin quit the party on Wednesday (June 3) protesting against the party’s decision to support the NPP nominee James Sangma to contest the lone Lok Sabha seat.
All the MDA partners have extended suport to James after a meeting held in the city on Wednesday.
Kharjahrin had unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
When contacted, Kharjahrin said it was his personal decision to quit the party and refused to comment further on the matter.
“I have submitted the resignation letter explaining the reason”, he said.
“At a time when the UDP is actively contesting against the NPP in the bye-election to the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency and seeking the people’s mandate on the basis of an alternative political vision, supporting an NPP candidate for the Rajya Sabha sends a contradictory and confusing message to the electorate. Such a decision undermines the credibility of our political stand and raises serious questions about the consistency of our commitment before the people. The people of Meghalaya deserve clarity and honesty. We cannot, on one hand, ask the voters to reject the NPP and, on the other hand, facilitate the political advancement of the same party when political convenience demands it. I believe that such actions weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and erode the moral authority of the party”, Kharjahrin said in the letter.
