Meghalaya Launches ₹20 Crore Initiative to Trace Southeast Asian Roots

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya has officially launched Ki Dienjat, Revisiting the Roots, Re-examining Khasi-Jaiñtia Socio-Cultural Linkages with Southeast Asia, a landmark initiative aimed at scientifically exploring the state’s historical, linguistic, and cultural ties to Southeast Asia.

Backed by an initial investment of ₹20 crore over the next 18 months, the comprehensive project covers both the Khasi-Jaiñtia and Garo regions. During the launch, the Chief Minister noted that this endeavor carries forward the long-held vision of his late father, P. A. Sangma, who frequently emphasized the need for deep, academic research into the origins of the state’s indigenous people.

Calling this initial rollout “only the beginning,” the government hopes the journey will inspire a new generation of researchers. Beyond historical documentation, the initiative is expected to open fresh avenues for cultural exchange, tourism, music, museum development, and academic collaboration, ultimately ensuring that Meghalaya’s youth remain deeply connected to their ancestral roots.
