Two local bar associations in Meghalaya—the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association—have revoked the membership of Senior Advocate Amit Kumar, who also serves as the Advocate General of Meghalaya.
The bar associations termed recent statements made by Kumar, in which he blamed the legal fraternity for failing to protect law interns and women lawyers, as defamatory, prompting the revocation of his membership.
The two associations have also written to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, urging him to remove Kumar from the post of Advocate General of the state.
This development follows a recent controversy surrounding a senior lawyer who allegedly sexually assaulted a female law intern, and the subsequent parading of the accused lawyer by members of the HNYF (Hynniewtrep National Youth Front) in Shillong.
