In a major political realignment in Northeast India, eight sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) belonging to Meghalaya’s regional United Democratic Party (UDP) formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The mass induction took place in the presence of Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, BJP Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra, national spokesperson Anil Antony, and BJP Meghalaya State President Rikman G. Momin.
The MLAs Who Made the Move
All eight legislators hail from the Khasi-Jaintia-Ri-Bhoi belt:

Impact on the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly
The switch causes a sharp shift in the power dynamics of the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly:
- BJP: The party’s tally jumps from 2 to 10 MLAs, catapulting it to the status of the second-largest party in the state assembly.
- UDP: The regional heavyweight saw its numerical footprint severely reduced from 12 seats down to just 4.
- Coalition Dynamics: Both the NPP and the BJP are coalition partners within the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA). Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) remains in the lead with 33 MLAs, but the BJP’s enhanced strength substantially increases its leverage within the ruling coalition.
