Court proceedings across Meghalaya were severely disrupted on Tuesday as lawyers staged an indefinite work boycott demanding the immediate removal of Advocate General (AG) Amit Kumar.
- Cause of Protest: The High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association launched the stir following controversial in-court remarks made by Kumar regarding local lawyers during a harassment case hearing. The bar bodies previously voted to debar him.
- Impact: Judicial work across the High Court, district courts, and tribunals came to a near standstill. Only urgent bail matters were exempted to avoid hardship for undertrials.
- Current Status: Despite appeals from the Supreme Court Bar Association and defense of Kumar by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the bar associations have petitioned Governor C.H. Vijayashankar and affirmed that the boycott will continue until Kumar is removed from office.
